Bhagidari: To help residents deal with community problems
Bhagidari is a welfare-enhanced program that was recently introduced by the Government of India. It aimed at the promotion of civic (resident) participation in local governance. It is a Citizen-to-Government (C2G) partnership initiative. Individuals associated with this programme provided their helping hand in solving problems of residents of Delhi. The problems were of power outages, erratic water supply, waste disposal, sanitation and hygiene etc.
The main aim was to establish awareness of the environment and secure environment friendly relations and a healthy alliance with the government and the citizens. All efforts were made to protect our planet Earth from destruction and wastage. Efficient utilization of resources was the main concern. Workshops were conducted in RWAs (Resident Welfare Associations). The workshops were catered to the needs and the questions/problems of the residents regarding their community.
e.g. "Save Water" Campaign
"Save Electricity" Campaign
Anti Littering Campaigns
Rain Water Harvesting Campaigns
However, there are some flaws associated with this programme. They are as follows:
- Lengthy process of getting work done - upto six months (after the problem has been assessed in a letter sent to the officer-in-charge, estimation of funds are done in the flood control department; an approval is thereby made between 4 to 6 months)
- At times, meetings don't happen for three months in a row, approx (residents get worried and are frenzy towards the system)
